Hiraizumi Onsen

Hiraizumi Onsen is located in Hiraizumi, a small town in Iwate Prefecture that preserves one of Japan's greatest medieval cultural treasures as a UNESCO World Heritage Site — the temples and gardens of Hiraizumi represent the pinnacle achievement of the Northern Fujiwara clan, who ruled from here during the late Heian period (11th-12th centuries) and created a Buddhist Pure Land capital rivaling Kyoto in its artistic ambition, centered on the breathtaking Chūson-ji temple complex and its Konjikidō (Golden Hall), an intimate chapel whose interior surfaces are entirely clad in gold leaf and mother-of-pearl mosaic. The Fujiwara cultural flowering ended violently when Minamoto no Yoritomo destroyed the clan in 1189, and Hiraizumi's subsequent centuries of relative obscurity preserved its monuments from redevelopment, making it a rare time capsule of Heian Buddhist civilization.
