Senmaya Onsen

Senmaya Onsen is situated in Ichinoseki, specifically in the Senmaya area of southern Iwate Prefecture close to the spectacular Genbikei Gorge, where the Iwai River has carved a dramatic 2-kilometer canyon through ancient granite and basalt, its emerald pools and sheer rock walls accessible via a cliff-hugging walking trail and famous for the aerial delivery of dango sweet rice dumplings and drinks via rope-and-basket operated by restaurant staff from the clifftop to visitors standing in the gorge below — one of Japan's most charmingly eccentric rural experiences.
