Chikugo Onsen

Chikugo Onsen is found in Chikugo, a city in the Chikugo River basin of southern Fukuoka Prefecture set in the broad agricultural plain that has given the region its name and sustained generations of rice cultivation, vegetable farming, and the textile production traditions that once made the Chikugo region — particularly the city of Kurume — one of Japan's most important centers for the production of kasuri (ikat) patterned fabric, a weaving tradition that spread from Kurume across Japan in the 19th century as Chikugo kasuri became one of the most widely used cotton fabrics in everyday Japanese clothing. The city's agricultural prosperity is visible in its well-tended farmsteads and the productive fields of the Chikugo River plain, whose fertile alluvial soils support some of Fukuoka Prefecture's most productive farming. The onsen here draw on silica-rich geothermal springs from the volcanic geology of northern Kyushu, providing mineral bathing in an agricultural community whose quiet prosperity and textile heritage make it a representative example of Kyushu's inland farming civilization at its most characteristic.
