Fukutsu Onsen is located in Fukutsu, a coastal city in northern Fukuoka Prefecture facing the Genkai Sea, celebrated throughout Japan as the home of Miyajidake Shrine — one of Japan's most dramatic Shinto sanctuaries, famous for possessing the largest shimenawa (sacred rope) in Japan, an enormous twisted straw cable weighing several tons that marks the boundary of the sacred space, and for the spectacular phenomenon of the 'Pillar of Light' (Hikari no Michishirube), when on two days each year — around the spring and autumn equinoxes — the setting sun aligns perfectly with the shrine's main approach road and the sea beyond, flooding the two-kilometer stone-paved approach in golden light that seems to connect the shrine directly to the horizon. The annual viewing of this alignment has become one of Fukuoka Prefecture's most beloved seasonal events.
