The Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen is a Japanese high-speed rail line and part of the nationwide Shinkansen network. Located in the northwestern part of the island of Kyushu, it is operated by the Kyushu Railway Company and is informally known as the Nagasaki Shinkansen. The 66-kilometre (41 mi) section between Nagasaki and Takeo-Onsen opened on 23 September 2022 and is the shortest Shinkansen in Japan.
Insider tip — Sasebo Onsen serves Japan's prominent naval base city on the western coast of Kyushu, where deep drilled sodium-chloride water provides a robust mineral soak. The port setting means the bathing culture blends Kyushu warmth with a practical, working-class directness. Nearby Kujuku-shima's 99 islands, visible from hilltops, add scenic context to any visit. Early-morning sessions are popular with naval personnel and fishermen before the city wakes.
