Fuyuzuki Onsen is located in Kumamoto City, the prefectural capital of Kumamoto in central Kyushu, a city whose identity is inseparable from Kumamoto Castle — one of Japan's three great castles, a magnificent 17th-century fortress whose black-plastered walls and complex layered rooflines represent the pinnacle of Japanese castle architecture and whose partial collapse in the 2016 Kumamoto earthquakes (magnitude 7.0 and 7.3, among the most damaging earthquakes in postwar Japan) created a decade-long restoration project that has become a testament to the city's determination to preserve its heritage. Kumamoto is also celebrated for the formal landscape of Suizenji Jojuen Garden, whose miniature recreation of the Tokaido highway's 53 stations includes a perfect small-scale replica of Mount Fuji, and for the city's vibrant local gastronomy including Kumamoto's famous karashi renkon (lotus root stuffed with mustard miso) and basashi (raw horse meat sashimi). The onsen here provide silica-rich mineral bathing in a resilient and historically proud city still in the process of rebuilding its most treasured monument.
