Amakusa Onsen is located in the Amakusa Islands, an archipelago of approximately 120 islands in the Amakusa-nada Sea west of Kumamoto and Nagasaki prefectures, a region of extraordinary Christian heritage as the homeland of the Amakusa-Shimabara Rebellion of 1637-38 and the birthplace of its charismatic teenage leader Amakusa Shirō — whose uprising of Christian peasants, ruined samurai, and ronin against the brutal taxation of the Tokugawa regime ended in the massacre of approximately 37,000 rebels and their families at Hara Castle, permanently extinguishing open Christianity in Japan for two centuries. Today the Amakusa Islands preserve a unique legacy of hidden Christian culture in small village churches, and the archipelago's dramatic seascapes of volcanic islands, emerald channels, and Pacific vistas provide the setting for remarkable wildlife encounters with rare Irrawaddy dolphins — one of only a handful of locations worldwide where these freshwater-adapted cetaceans inhabit coastal marine waters.
