The Yunomae Line is a railway line in Kumamoto Prefecture, Japan, connecting Hitoyoshi-Onsen Station in Hitoyoshi and Yunomae Station in Yunomae. It is the only railway line operated by third sector railway company Kumagawa Railroad . As the company name suggests, the line parallels the Kuma River. The company is also called Kumatetsu (くま鉄). The company took over the former JR Kyushu line in 1989.
Insider tip — Taragi Onsen sits at the confluence of the Kuma and Ichifusa rivers deep in the Kyushu Mountains, where bicarbonate spring water is channeled into a community bath house surrounded by steep forested ridges. The town is a base for exploring the ancient Kuma Highway that once connected inland mountain communities to the Amakusa coast. Local sake breweries use the exceptionally soft mineral water from the same aquifer system. Autumn leaves reflecting in the river below the bath terrace make October the most scenic bathing month in Taragi.
