Uchiko Onsen

Uchiko Onsen is found in Uchiko, a beautifully preserved merchant town in the Oda River valley of Ehime Prefecture whose immaculate historic townscape of whitewashed merchant residences, sake breweries, and traditional wax workshops has made it one of Shikoku's most beloved heritage destinations — a town where the prosperity generated by the Japanese wax (mokuro) trade in the late Edo and Meiji periods is preserved in the architecture of the Yōkaichi Old Town district, where walls of traditional plaster and dark-timbered facades have been maintained in near-pristine condition as a living example of the prosperous merchant culture that once made Uchiko the commercial center of central Ehime.
