Katsuren Onsen is set on the Katsuren Peninsula in Uruma City, near the ruins of Katsuren Castle — a UNESCO World Heritage gusuku fortress built some 600 years ago that was the seat of Amawari, the ambitious Ryukyuan lord whose rebellion against the Shuri throne became one of the defining political dramas of the ancient kingdom. The peninsula extends into the turquoise waters of Kinnakawa Bay, where bridges now connect a chain of offshore islands to the mainland in a scenic causeway popular with cyclists and coastal walkers. The onsen's mineral baths offer warm recovery by the sea after exploring one of Okinawa's most historically charged and scenically dramatic peninsulas.
