Fujimiya Onsen stands at the foot of Mount Fuji near the Fujinomiya Sengen Grand Shrine, the head of all 1,300 Sengen shrines across Japan and the spiritual gateway through which Fuji pilgrims have ascended the sacred mountain for more than a thousand years. The city is equally celebrated as the birthplace of Fujinomiya yakisoba, a particularly satisfying variation of stir-fried noodles that was crowned Japan's best B-class gourmet dish and now draws food pilgrims from across the country alongside the mountain's more traditional worshippers. Geothermal mineral waters at this onsen, drawing heat from the volcanic foundations of Mount Fuji itself, offer a deeply symbolic soak at the base of Japan's most revered peak.
