Shimotsuke Onsen takes its name from the ancient province of Shimotsuke — modern Tochigi Prefecture — a domain whose fertile plains between the Nikko mountains and the Kanto lowlands nurtured one of the most productive agricultural regions in the Edo-period economy, supplying rice, silk, and lacquerware to the capital along the major highways that crossed its territory.
