Toukai Onsen

Toukai Onsen lies in Tokai Village, a community whose name is indelibly associated with the history of nuclear energy in Japan as the site of the Japan Atomic Energy Research Institute (JAEA) and the location of the 1999 Tokaimura nuclear criticality accident — the most serious nuclear incident in Japan's history before the 2011 Fukushima disaster — in which a uranium processing facility reached uncontrolled criticality, exposing workers to lethal radiation doses and prompting Japan's first large-scale nuclear evacuation.
