Tosashimizu Onsen

Tosashimizu Onsen occupies the southernmost community of Shikoku island, where Cape Ashizuri thrusts into the Pacific in one of Japan's most dramatic cape landscapes — a sheer headland of granite cliffs dropping to turbulent blue-green water, crowned by the Cape Ashizuri Lighthouse whose beam sweeps the shipping lanes between Japan and East Asia on nights when the Pacific fog rolls in from the open ocean. The cape is the 38th stop on the Shikoku 88-temple pilgrimage circuit, with Kongofukuji temple perched on the cliff top where pilgrims have arrived since the 9th century — many walking the entire 1,200-kilometer circuit — to pray and contemplate the vast Pacific spread before them. The onsen's siliceous geothermal waters provide restorative bathing at the southern tip of Shikoku, where the combination of cape scenery, pilgrimage tradition, and the elemental encounter with the open Pacific creates one of Japan's most emotionally charged and scenically powerful destinations.
