Asahimachi Onsen

Asahimachi Onsen serves the northernmost community of Toyama Prefecture, where the Asahi River descends from the Asahi mountain range through a coastal community on the Japan Sea whose position at the Niigata boundary gives it the character of a transitional landscape between the Toyama plain's gentle agricultural character and the more rugged Niigata coastal geography further north. The Asahi mountains above the town shelter virgin beech forests of exceptional ecological integrity, protected within the Asahi-Dake Prefectural Natural Park as one of the finest remaining old-growth beech forest ecosystems on the Japan Sea coast, a landscape that changes dramatically with the seasons from the deep snow of winter to the vivid green of summer and the blazing yellows of autumn foliage. The onsen's siliceous mineral waters, tapping into the geothermal energy of the mountain geology above, provide therapeutic bathing in a coastal community where the Japan Sea meets an exceptionally preserved mountain wilderness at the northern limit of Toyama's remarkable natural and thermal heritage.
