Shinjyo Onsen

Shinjyo Onsen is found in Shinjyo City, a proud castle town in northern Yamagata Prefecture best known for the Shinjyo Matsuri, a magnificent annual festival in which enormous lantern-topped floats called yamaboko are paraded through the streets accompanied by music, traditional costumes, and pageantry that rivals the famous festivals of Kyoto. The city is also a major production center for Yamagata rice and local sake breweries that benefit from the pure snowmelt waters of the Mogami River watershed. The thermal waters here soothe festival-goers and travelers alike who come to experience one of Tohoku's most visually spectacular summer celebrations.
