Rikubetsu Onsen is found in Rikubetsu Town in the Tokachi subprefecture of Hokkaido, a small inland community that holds the distinction of being Japan's coldest regularly-inhabited settlement, where winter temperatures routinely plunge below -30 degrees Celsius and have reached as low as -35.8°C, creating an extraordinary landscape of frost-shattered fields and frozen rivers that tests the resilience of its dairy farming community.
