Yatsushiro Onsen Kumamoto is a thermal bathing facility in Yatsushiro City on the Yatsushiro Sea coast of southern Kumamoto Prefecture, a historically important port city that served as the administrative and commercial gateway to the Kuma River valley and the Hitoyoshi Basin, one of Japan's most beautiful river valleys where the wild Kuma River offers some of the finest whitewater rafting in the Japanese archipelago through a dramatic gorge of ancient vegetation and traditional river villages that have been designated a nationally significant cultural and natural landscape. The city is historically associated with Katō Kiyomasa, the celebrated daimyo who built Kumamoto Castle and governed the Higo domain with enlightened efficiency, and Yatsushiro Castle (Matsue Castle) preserves the ruins of one of Kyushu's finest feudal strongholds above the modern city. The chloride thermal spring waters here provide bathing in a historically significant city that serves as the coastal gateway to some of Kyushu's most dramatic interior landscapes, including the Hitoyoshi samurai heritage town, the Aoi Aso Shrine, and the magnificent river valley culture of the upper Kuma River system.
