Fujioka Onsen Gunma

Fujioka Onsen is located in Fujioka City, in the southwestern corner of Gunma Prefecture where the Kanto plain meets the first ridges of the Chichibu mountains. Gunma is celebrated throughout Japan as a prefecture of exceptional thermal wealth — home to Kusatsu, Ikaho and Shima among others — and Fujioka, though more modest than these famous names, participates in the same deep geothermal abundance that characterises this volcanic and mountainous inland prefecture.

The sodium-chloride water emerges at 41 °C with a slightly acidic pH of 6.9, warm and enveloping with a mineral saltiness that lingers gently on the skin. The onsen here serves primarily the residents of Fujioka and the surrounding agricultural plain, functioning as a local bathing institution rather than a resort destination. This community-facing character is part of its appeal: the rituals of undressing, entering, soaking and conversation take place without ceremony, in the straightforward manner that defines neighbourhood onsen culture across the Kanto and Chubu regions.
