Echizen Onsen in the coastal city of Echizen, Fukui Prefecture, draws from springs beneath the Daicho coast, one of Japan's most celebrated locations for traditional Japanese paper-making, or washi, a craft that has been practised in the Imadate district for over fifteen hundred years and designated as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The chloride-rich spring water provides warming, mineral-rich baths that have sustained the papermakers of this coastal community through the physical demands of their ancient craft, which involves standing for long hours in cold water pressing fibres into sheets.
