Shirahama in Wakayama is one of Japan's most ancient coastal hot spring resorts, its white sand beach and chloride-rich volcanic springs documented since the 7th century when Emperor Saimei bathed here, formally designating Shirahama among Japan's three great ancient hot springs alongside Arima and Dogo in texts over 1,300 years old. The famous Saki-no-Yu bath — set directly on ocean rocks where Pacific waves crash around bathers in an outdoor stone pool — and the spectacular Sandanbeki sea cliffs rising 50 meters above the Pacific surf are Shirahama's most dramatic scenic assets alongside its celebrated white sand beach.
