Relaxing — deep, immediate muscle release.
Loaded with major ions — the essential minerals (Ca, Mg).
Soft water — natural, classic buoyancy.
Yamanaka Onsen is the most inland of the four Kaga Onsen towns in Ishikawa Prefecture, tucked into the gorge of the Daishoji River where the water carves through dramatic limestone cliffs draped in maples and pines. The great haiku poet Matsuo Bashō visited Yamanaka on his journey through the Hokuriku region and praised its waters above all others — a literary distinction the town has worn with quiet pride for three centuries.
The calcium-rich spring water runs notably hot at 44 °C, a vigorous heat that opens the pores and demands slow, deliberate immersion. Its pH of 7.1, close to neutral, gives the water a clean, fresh feel with the mineral weight of calcium lending a characteristic silkiness. The gorge-side rotenburo — outdoor rock baths perched above the rushing river — are among the most picturesque in all Japan, particularly in autumn when the surrounding forest ignites in rust and amber. Yamanaka remains a place where the art of bathing and the art of landscape are inseparable.
