Yunogo Onsen in Tsuyama, Okayama prefecture, is a historic hot spring resort in the Mimasaka highlands of western Honshu, where bicarbonate-rich sodium waters at around 38°C have been used therapeutically since the late Edo period in a quiet mountain setting beside the Yoshii River. The waters are traditionally called 'bijin-no-yu' — beautiful skin water — for their reputation of enhancing complexion through mineral action, and the compact ryokan town retains an unhurried atmosphere of traditional Japanese onsen culture. The surrounding Mimasaka region is famous for its feudal castle town of Tsuyama, Nishigawa Genji hotaru firefly viewing, and the Chugoku Highlands' gentle forested landscapes that characterize the backcountry between Okayama and Tottori.
