Hijiori Onsen in Okura village, Yamagata prefecture, is a compact traditional onsen settlement in a remote mountain basin of the Mogami highlands, where sulfurous geothermal waters fill communal baths in a village of wooden ryokan whose rustic character has been preserved by deliberate resistance to modern development. The legend of Hijiori — that the spring was discovered by the Buddhist monk Kōbō Daishi — connects the thermal waters to the sacred mountain pilgrimages of Japanese Shingon Buddhism that crossed these Dewa highlands for a thousand years. The surrounding Obanazawa basin, famous for safflower (beni-bana) cultivation used in Kyoto kimono dyeing, and the Shōnai Plains rice culture give Hijiori's remote onsen a deep agricultural and religious heritage unique to Yamagata's mountain interior.
