Ibusuki Satsuma Lakeside Onsen is part of the famous Ibusuki thermal resort in southern Kagoshima, globally known for the unique sunamushi — volcanic sand bath — where beach attendants bury guests in naturally heated black volcanic sand at 50°C just above the waterline on Ibusuki's beach, while bicarbonate-chloride spring water fills the indoor baths. Ibusuki sits at the southern tip of the Satsuma Peninsula beside Lake Ikeda — Japan's largest crater lake and home to enormous Ōunagi eels — with the iconic twin peaks of Kaimondake volcano rising from the shoreline like a miniature Fuji.
