Seseragi no Yu Mogami, in the Mogami river valley of Yamagata Prefecture, draws on chloride thermal waters in a setting defined by the Mogami-gawa — the great river immortalised in haiku by Matsuo Bashō during his 1689 journey through the Tohoku region, whose Oku no Hosomichi ('Narrow Road to the Deep North') remains Japan's most celebrated travel poem.
