Misasa Onsen Tottori

Misasa Onsen occupies the narrow valley of the Misasa River in the mountains of Tottori Prefecture, facing the Japan Sea coast in the Chugoku region of western Honshu. The resort town clusters along the riverbank beneath steep forested slopes, its traditional ryokan facades, stone-paved lanes, and footbaths creating one of the Chugoku region's most atmospheric small onsen towns.

The spring waters combine bicarbonate and silica mineral profiles at 42 °C—a genuinely hot immersion—with a comfortably neutral pH of 7.8. The silica content lends the water a characteristic smoothness, while the bicarbonate fraction gives it a slightly effervescent quality. Misasa's waters have attracted visitors for centuries, and the town retains a gentle, unhurried character where guests in yukata drift between the riverside ashiyu footbaths and the intimate private baths of their inn.
