Geto Onsen is one of Japan's most historically ancient hot spring resorts, founded in 1134 and situated in a deep mountain valley near Kitakami city in Iwate Prefecture, where sulphurous thermal waters emerge from a dramatically isolated gorge accessible only by a narrow mountain road through old-growth forest. The highly sulphurous mineral composition of Geto's waters has sustained its reputation for nearly nine centuries, associated with well-being and the softness they leave on the skin within the classical Japanese toji tradition of extended immersive bathing.
