Tono Onsen is found in Tono, a small city in the Kitakami Highlands of Iwate Prefecture that holds a unique place in Japanese cultural memory as the folklore capital of the nation — the city's legends of kappa (water sprites who lurk in rivers and drag the unwary to their deaths), zashiki warashi (mischievous child spirits who bring fortune to the houses they inhabit), and countless other supernatural beings were collected and published by the folklorist Kunio Yanagita in his 1910 masterwork 'Legends of Tono' (Tono Monogatari), which established the foundation of Japanese folklore studies and made Tono's name synonymous with the deep mythological imagination of rural Japan. The city's preserved thatched magariya farmhouses, medieval castle ruins, and the Denshōen folk museum recreate the atmosphere of the rural Tohoku world that gave rise to these legends. The onsen at Tono provide mineral bathing in a city where Japan's supernatural folklore feels genuinely present in every mist-wreathed valley and river bend.
