Kashima Onsen Saga Sento is a community bathhouse located in Kashima City, Saga Prefecture, on the shores of the Ariake Sea — the inner bay of Kyushu whose dramatic tidal flats, the largest in Japan, support the cultivation of nori dried seaweed that Kashima supplies to markets across the country. The chloride-rich sodium thermal waters draw from deep aquifers beneath the coastal plain, producing warm saline baths with a mineral composition that mirrors the surrounding sea and offers warming and circulation-stimulating properties for this fishing and farming community. The dark, iron-tinged thermal water — known as kuroyu or black water — is characteristic of the greater Tokyo urban onsen belt and stains the tubs a distinctive amber-brown.
