Hakoneyumoto Onsen Ashinoyu

Hakoneyumoto Onsen Ashinoyu is located in the Hakone area of Kanagawa Prefecture, within the Hakone-Ashinoko Quasi-National Park — the outer rim of the Hakone caldera, a collapsed volcanic crater whose hot springs, geysers, and fumaroles have made it one of Japan's most visited spa destinations and whose position just 80 kilometres from Tokyo makes it the most accessible major volcanic onsen area for Japan's largest metropolitan population. The sulphurous thermal waters characteristic of the Hakone volcanic zone emerge from fumarolic venting associated with the Owakudani (Great Boiling Valley) geothermal area — where eggs boiled black in sulphurous springs are a famous local delicacy — and are appreciated within a long thermal tradition. Ashinoyu's position overlooking Lake Ashi, the caldera lake with its iconic views of Mount Fuji reflected in still water alongside red torii gates rising from the lake — one of Japan's most reproduced visual images — makes this one of the most scenically celebrated thermal destinations in all of Japan.
