Yunokami Onsen Shimogo

Yunokami Onsen Shimogo is located in Shimogo Town in the Minamiaizu region of Fukushima Prefecture, in the upper valley of the Arakawa River in the deep mountains of the Aizu highlands — a remote and snowy region famous for its fierce winters, traditional lacquerware (Aizu nuri), sake brewing, and the samurai spirit of the Aizu clan who resisted the Meiji Restoration until the bitter 1868 Battle of Aizu, one of the most poignant episodes in Japanese history. The sulphurous thermal waters of Yunokami emerge from the volcanic geology of the southern Aizu highlands, and the onsen retains an extraordinarily traditional character with wooden bathhouses directly above the river gorge and the Yagan Railway's steam-heated train stopping at the riverside platform — one of Japan's most romantic and historically evocative railway onsen experiences. The nearby Ouchi-juku post village preserves the complete Edo-period streetscape of a Nikko Kaido highway rest stop, making the combination of Aizu samurai history, steam railway, and sulphurous mountain hot spring one of the most authentically historical onsen experiences in all of Tohoku.
