Furofushi Onsen is a dramatic clifftop open-air bath located on the rugged Shimokita Peninsula coast of Aomori Prefecture in northern Honshu, where chloride-sodium-ferruginous hot spring water flows into rock-hewn pools perched directly above the crashing waves of the Tsugaru Strait. The name Furofushi means immortality bath, reflecting the traditional belief in the spring's potent revitalising properties, and the experience of bathing in iron-tinged amber water while watching sea eagles soar overhead is deeply memorable. This raw, elemental onsen exemplifies the Japanese concept of yasei no yu — wild springs — where bathing and untamed coastal nature are inseparable.
