Nanki-Katsuura Onsen

Nanki-Katsuura Onsen sits along the rugged Kumano Coast of Wakayama Prefecture on the Kii Peninsula, a UNESCO World Heritage coastline where ancient pilgrimage routes descend to meet the Pacific Ocean. The town of Katsuura is celebrated for its dramatic geography — sea caves, forested headlands, and small islands connected to shore by arched bridges — lending the onsen district an air of legend. The water is a sodium-chloride spring at a mild 35 °C with a near-neutral pH of 7.1, characteristic of the coastal onsen tradition on the Kii Peninsula. The saltwater mineral content gives the bath a silky, slightly dense feel, and the warmth lingers pleasantly on the skin long after leaving the water.
