Shimobe Onsen is a traditional hot spring resort in the town of Minobu in the Fuji River valley of Yamanashi Prefecture, historically associated with Takeda Shingen, the famous Sengoku period warlord who, according to local lore, came to its bicarbonate springs with his soldiers within a long thermal tradition. The bicarbonate waters emerge at around 36°C along forested riverbanks and are characterised by mild alkalinity and a smooth texture on the skin, prized for the softness they leave on the skin. Visitors combine bathing in the historic springs with pilgrimage to nearby Minobusan Kuonji temple, the head temple of the Nichiren Buddhist sect, for a journey through Yamanashi's deep cultural and natural heritage.
