Yunokawa Onsen is Hokkaido's most celebrated hot spring resort, located within the city of Hakodate in southwestern Hokkaido, where chloride-calcium springs have been enjoyed since the early Edo period within a long thermal tradition and are legendarily associated with Tokugawa shogunate officials. The resort district borders the Matsukaze River and Hakodate Bay, combining traditional Japanese ryokan culture with views of Hakodate — a former treaty port with some of Japan's finest Western-style 19th-century architecture. As Hokkaido's only truly urban resort onsen, Yunokawa blends island convenience with thermal authenticity, including a famous public footbath at the tram stop where commuters soak their feet.
