Suanbo Hot Springs Resort

Suanbo Onsen is one of Korea's oldest and most traditionally revered hot spring destinations, located in Suanbo in the Chungju area of North Chungcheong Province, where calcium-rich spring waters have been documented as used by Korean royalty and aristocracy since the Goryeo Kingdom period (10th–14th centuries) and were formally developed as a state-patronised spa resort during the Joseon Dynasty. The thermal waters of Suanbo, emerging from deep granite formations of the Sobaeksan range, have a long tradition of royal patronage — King Sejong the Great (creator of the Korean Hangul alphabet) is said to have visited these springs — giving them a venerable royal heritage. The contemporary hot spring hotel district of Suanbo preserves much of its mid-20th-century resort character, offering an authentic Korean onsen experience without the commercial scale of major tourist destinations. The proximity to the Woraksan National Park, the historic Chungjuho reservoir, and the Danyang limestone gorge area of North Chungcheong creates excellent natural and cultural opportunities alongside the traditional spring bathing.
