Izumrud Chundzha is a thermal resort complex in the Chundzha area of southeastern Kazakhstan's Almaty Region, situated within the scenic Ili River valley at the foot of the snow-capped Zailiysky Alatau, where chloride-mineral springs have been developed into a recreational and therapeutic bathing facility. The resort draws on the rich Central Asian tradition of communal bathing and mineral water therapy, incorporating elements of both Soviet sanatorium culture and contemporary leisure tourism in its facilities. The name Izumrud, meaning emerald in Russian, evokes the green valley landscape and the characteristic colour of the mountain-fed springs in this corner of Kazakhstan's most accessible mountain recreation zone.
