A former salt trading post first mentioned in 1636 on the banks of the Nemunas, Druskininkai received official spa-town status from Tsar Nicholas I in 1837, triggering the construction of guesthouses and wooden villas that still define the old town's architectural signature. These ornate facades, blending Swiss, German and Zakopane styles with turrets and Russian decorative elements, survived both World Wars and now house hotels and restaurants along Maironio and Kosciuškos avenues.

The town today counts over fifty mineral water springs, rich in sodium chloride, calcium, magnesium and bromine, which shaped its identity as a spa city at the turn of the 20th century, when it was already a popular summer retreat for the middle classes of Vilnius, Warsaw and Moscow.

Insider tip — Druskininkai is Lithuania's premier spa city, set in a pine forest by the Nemunas river on the Belarusian border, known since the 18th century for its chloride-sodium brine springs. The water has an exceptionally high salt concentration compared to Baltic spa peers, making it particularly suited to cardiovascular and metabolic treatments. The modern Aquapark and Grand Spa Europa complex coexist with older Soviet-era sanatoriums still operating as medical institutions. Forested walking trails and a gravity-defying adventure park make Druskininkai genuinely enjoyable for non-bathers too.
