Vichy Malgache (Antsirabe)

Vichy Malgache is the informal name for the historic thermal spa complex at Antsirabe, the highland city in Madagascar's Vakinankaratra Region that French colonial authorities deliberately developed as Madagascar's equivalent of the famous French spa city of Vichy, exploiting the city's bicarbonate-carbonated mineral springs for spa tourism from the early 20th century onwards. The carbonated bicarbonate waters of Antsirabe — naturally effervescent and rich in minerals — were marketed under the Vichy analogy to attract colonial officials and wealthy settlers seeking a European-standard thermal experience at high tropical altitude, within a long thermal tradition associated with well-being. Today Antsirabe's thermal heritage, visible in its belle époque-style thermal buildings, wide colonial boulevards, and the continuing use of the mineral springs, makes this highland city a uniquely layered destination where Malagasy tradition and French colonial ambition are permanently intertwined.
