Rehoboth Spa

Rehoboth Spa is a natural thermal spring facility in the town of Rehoboth in the Hardap Region of central Namibia, where bicarbonate-rich warm waters associated with the geothermal activity of the Rehoboth basement rocks are used in a municipal spa complex serving the town's Baster community — the descendants of mixed Afrikaner-Khoikhoi ancestry who settled at Rehoboth in 1870 after trekking north from the Cape Colony with their distinct cultural and political identity. The spa provides accessible thermal bathing within the social infrastructure of the Baster community, whose unique history and cultural identity — preserved through a century and a half of political self-governance in the Rehoboth Gebiet — makes this Namibian spring site one of the most culturally specific thermal destinations in southern Africa. The surrounding Hardap Region landscape of rocky desert savanna, the Oanob River reservoir, and the red granite inselbergs of central Namibia creates a dramatic visual context for this historically layered spring.
