Svalbard Geothermal Pools

The Svalbard Geothermal Pools on the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard represent some of the northernmost geothermal activity on Earth, with thermal springs emerging at latitudes of 78° North — just 1,300 kilometres from the North Pole. The most significant thermal site, Bockfjorden in the north of Spitsbergen, hosts warm bicarbonate-sodium springs in a landscape of polar tundra, glaciers and Arctic wildlife. Bathing in geothermal water in Svalbard's midnight sun or under the Northern Lights, with polar bears potentially nearby, is an experience of almost incomparable remoteness and drama. Access is limited and requires expedition-level preparation, but for those who reach them, these springs offer one of the world's most extreme and extraordinary thermal bathing experiences.
