Twenty-seven kilometres south of Rotorua, Wai-o-Tapu — Māori for "sacred waters" — spreads out a geothermal landscape protected as a scenic reserve since 1931. The site gathers the Champagne Pool, a 65-metre-wide crater where carbon dioxide keeps the surface fizzing at around 73°C, the ever-shifting mineral hues of the Artist's Palette, and the Lady Knox Geyser, whose daily eruption reaches up to 20 metres.

The Lady Knox Geyser erupts every morning at 10:15 AM, triggered with soap. This is a walk-through site, not a bathing one — arrive early to catch the vivid colours in the morning light.
