Waimangu Volcanic Valley near Rotorua is the world's youngest geothermal system, born from the catastrophic 1886 eruption of Mount Tarawera that destroyed the legendary Pink and White Terraces and created a new chain of thermal lakes, hot springs, and silica formations in the valley below. The Inferno Crater Lake rises and falls 14 meters on a precise 38-day thermal cycle, while Frying Pan Lake — at 3.8 hectares the world's largest hot spring — maintains a surface temperature of around 55°C. Boat cruises on the thermal lakes beside steaming colonial-red cliffs, combined with walking trails past echoing fumaroles and blue-green hydrothermal vents, make Waimangu a scientifically and visually extraordinary geothermal experience.
