Tucked away in Methven at the gateway to the Southern Alps, Ōpuke Thermal Pools & Spa opened in late 2021 following a project first proposed by Methven Adventures back in 2009. Designed by New Zealand architects Sheppard & Rout, the building won the commercial category at the 2022 New Zealand Architecture Awards. What sets it apart is its energy approach: pool water is heated using around 500 solar thermal collectors covering roughly a quarter of the site, making it one of the country's first bathing complexes aimed at zero emissions.
The water is drawn from the Rangitata River, fed by glacial meltwater from the nearby Southern Alps. Since opening, the site has welcomed more than 100,000 visitors, drawn by its outdoor pools, high-end day spa and adults-only pool with swim-up bar. Framed by the peaks of Canterbury, Ōpuke represents a new generation of thermal bathing built around both relaxation and energy sobriety.
