Gyogi Onsen is located in Itami, Hyogo Prefecture. Its sodium-chloride thermal water reaches 40°C (104°F), in a facility that includes an indoor bath, an outdoor rotenburo bath and a sauna.
Insider tip — Gyogi Onsen honors the Buddhist monk Gyoki (668–749 AD) — one of Japan's most remarkable figures, who mapped the first comprehensive atlas of Japan, organized peasant labor to build roads and bridges, and helped construct Todaiji Temple's Great Buddha in Nara (the world's largest bronze statue). Gyoki is also credited with establishing dozens of temples, hostels for travelers, and communal baths (yado) across Japan — making an onsen named after him a fitting tribute. Itami city is where Japanese single malt whisky was pioneered at Kotobuki-sen distillery (1661).
