Goto Onsen is located in Kumamoto, on the island of Kyushu. Its iron-rich water, with an acidic pH of 6.3, reaches 42°C (108°F). An indoor bath, an outdoor rotenburo bath and a sauna round out the facility.
Insider tip — Goto Onsen draws iron-rich geothermal waters in Kumamoto Prefecture, the volcanic heart of Kyushu. The rust-coloured water deposits a thin mineral film on the skin that acts as a natural moisturiser. Kumamoto's onsen culture is rich and unpretentious, with many facilities catering to neighbourhood regulars rather than tourists. The tinge of iron also carries a faint earthy scent that veteran onsen enthusiasts regard as a mark of quality.
