On the fertile banks of the Rio Vizela in northern Portugal, the site's thermal history traces back to the Romans' arrival on the Iberian Peninsula in the 3rd century BC. From the 1st century BC onward, they built a genuine thermal complex here, around which a settlement grew, drawing people from various social backgrounds who came to enjoy the waters. The first modern thermal facilities date from 1785, later expanded considerably as visitor numbers grew.
This long history, combined with the lasting reputation of its waters, earned Vizela the nickname "queen of Portuguese thermal spas." To this day, the town remains inseparable from this centuries-old heritage born on the banks of its river.
