In Bad Gastein, in Austria's Salzburg region, the Felsentherme opened on 28 September 1968, becoming the country's first public thermal spa. The project, led by visionary architect Gerhard Garstenauer, took just fourteen months to build: his approach involved literally blasting the mountain rock to carve out the resting halls, giving the site its distinctive atmosphere.
Success was immediate, with 450 visitors on the very first public day and 120,000 guests within seven months. The local thermal water, enriched with minerals and radon after a journey of several millennia through underground rock layers, still feeds the facility's pools today, which have been renovated several times since, notably in 2004 and again between 2014 and 2017.
