At the southwestern tip of São Miguel in the Azores, Termas da Ferraria sits within the Pico das Camarinhas and Ponta da Ferraria Regional Natural Monument, a protected volcanic landscape valued for both its scenery and its geology. The eruption believed to have shaped this coastline dates back to around 1140, long before the island was settled, and the qualities of its waters were already noted in the 16th century by chronicler Gaspar Frutuoso in his work "Saudades da Terra."

The present-day baths, built in the mid-20th century, draw water of volcanic origin from boreholes some 20 metres deep, blended with seawater to reach a comfortable bathing temperature. The site now offers wellness treatments, physiotherapy and beauty care in a setting where the Atlantic Ocean meets black volcanic rock at the water's edge.

The tidal pools fill and cool with each wave, creating a constantly changing temperature mosaic that bathers can navigate across. The iron-rich carbonated bicarbonate water stains the surrounding basalt a vivid rust-orange, advertising its mineral potency. Timing the visit to low tide is essential as the pools disappear entirely beneath the surf at high water.
